The halter style is used with swimwear to maximize the sun exposure on the back and minimize tan lines. It is also used with dresses or shirts, to create an open back dress or tops. The strap around the neck can itself be covered by the wearer's hair, leaving behind the impression that nothing is holding the dress or shirt.
